Macy's Inc. gained 0.2% to $13.25 after the department store chain reported lower sales in the fiscal fourth quarter of 2024.
Revenue declined to $8.00 billion from $8.37 billion, net income swung to a profit of $342 million from a loss of $128 million, and earnings per diluted share rose to $1.21 from a loss of 47 cents a year ago.
Macy’s First 50 locations delivered the fourth consecutive quarter of comparable sales growth, up 0.8% on an owned basis and up 1.2% on an owned-plus-licensed basis.
The retailer reported fourth-quarter comparable sales down 1.1% on an owned basis, while its owned-plus-licensed-plus-marketplace comparable sales since the first quarter of 2022 were up 0.2%.
Bloomingdale’s reported owned comparable sales grew 4.8%, and its highest fourth quarter owned-plus-licensed-plus-marketplace comparable sales growth was 6.5%.
Blue Mercury reported its 16th consecutive quarter of comparable sales growth, up 6.2%.
The company guided for fiscal 2025 net sales between $21.0 billion and $21.4 billion, down from $22.29 billion in 2024, and adjusted earnings per diluted share between $2.05 and $2.25, down from $2.64 in 2024.
The outlook reflects the impact of fiscal 2024 store closures, which contributed roughly $700 million of annual net sales.
Macy’s plans to resume share buybacks under its remaining $1.4 billion share repurchase authorization.

Macy's declined 10.5% to $14.92 after the department store chain cut its full-year earnings estimate.
The company lowered its adjusted earnings per share to range between $2.25 and $2.50 from the previous estimate between $2.55 and $2.90.
However, the company revised its full-year sales to fall between $22.3 billion and $22.5 billion from the previous estimate between $22.1 billion and $22.4 billion.

Macy's declined 1.6% to $16.10 after the department store retailer delayed the release of its third quarter results by December 11.
Macy’s, Inc. net sales decreased 2.4% to $4.74 billion, with comparable sales down 2.4% on an owned basis and down 1.3% on an owned-plus-licensed-plus-marketplace basis.
Macy's net sales were down 3.1% and comparable sales fell 3.0%; Bloomingdale's net sales rose 1.4% and comparable sales up 1.0%; and Blue Mercury net sales were up 3.2% and comparable sales advanced 3.3%.
The company said it identified a single employee with responsibility for small package delivery expense accounting intentionally made erroneous accounting accrual entries. This accounted to approximately $132 to $154 million of cumulative delivery expenses from the fourth quarter of 2021 through fiscal third quarter ended November 2, 2024.
During this same time period, the company recognized approximately $4.36 billion of delivery expenses.
There is no indication that the erroneous accounting accrual entries had any impact on the company’s cash management activities or vendor payments, and the employee is no longer with the company.
Nordstrom and Dell Technologies are among the leading companies scheduled to release earnings this week.

Macy's Inc. gained 0.1% to $19.13 after the department store chain reported better-than-expected quarterly results.
Net sales in the first quarter declined 2.7% to $4.84 billion from $4.98 billion, net income dropped to $62 million from $155 million, and diluted earnings per share fell to 22 cents from 55 cents a year ago.
The retailer tightened its annual sales range to between $22.3 billion and $22.9 billion from the previous estimate of between $22.2 billion and $22.9 billion.
The company also lifted its adjusted diluted earnings per share range to between $2.55 and $2.90 from the $2.45 and $2.85 range released on February 27.

Ark House and Brigade Capital Management proposed to acquire shares in the company for $21 per share.
